Volvo backhoes provide end-to-end performance
Redesigned backhoe loaders from Volvo Construction Equipment combine two
machines in one perfectly formed unit. With new looks, improved comfort and using higher quality materials – the new B-Series unites a loader and backhoe in a marriage of equals.
The launch of its new BL61B and BL71B sees Volvo Construction Equipment
thoroughly redesign its backhoe loader range – offering improved performance, usability and a modern appearance. Employing high quality materials throughout, the machine combines in a single, stable platform the strength and simplicity of a Volvo wheel loader with the power and performance of a Volvo excavator.
Both machines have a new curvier, stylized look, as well as a roomier CareCab. With an operating weight that ranges from 7.1 tonnes to 9.8 tonnes, and gross power of 64 kW (86 hp) to 74.9 kW (100 hp), the BL61B and BL71B were designed and built with power, strength, long life and cost saving efficiency in mind.
Loader and boom
The one piece chassis, loader arm and excavator boom are all made from high quality steel and robotically welded, giving precise, constant weld runs for structural integrity.
The loader arm has a box-welded design and is reinforced with a cross tube. The larger excavator boom has a narrow, tall arch design that is inherently strong, and uses a closed box-welded approach with fewer components and welds, for durability and performance.
The boom allows excellent visibility into the trench, as well as enabling closer proximity to the truck for loading. The cast iron kingpost offers flexibility of movement and swing.
Control in your hands
Compared to previous models the new BL61B and BL71B feature new controls. The machines are fitted with two floor mounted ergonomic levers that give the optimum grip for the operators hand movements when operating the excavator. The right lever is fitted with a horn for safety, and the left lever can have an optional fingertip button. This button controls the two-way auxiliary hydraulic line required when using double acting excavator attachments.
The BL71B’s front loader is fitted with a single lever joystick for operating loader arm and bucket movements, multipurpose bucket opening and closing and also Forward, Reverse and Neutral transmission functions. Fitted with either 18 inch or 20 inch front tires, these machines have a small turning circle and are extremely manoeuvrable, as well as easier to position on site. Helped by a new cast bucket linkage design, the bucket can rotate 205o – allowing vertical digging in all positions without repositioning the machine. Stability is improved by new rectangular stabilizer feet that have 30% more ground surface contact over previous models. The stabilizers are independently controlled, the pads are rotatable and easily replaced when worn.
Delivering the power
The BL61B and BL71B both feature Volvo’s latest D5D four cylinder 4.8 litre engines, with direct injection and turbo charging. These high torque, fuel efficient engines meet European Stage IIIA emissions legislation. The torque converter on these machines is one of the largest in the industry and has excellent peak torque and torque rise. A differential lock on the rear axle is engaged via a foot switch on the side of the brake pedal and provides maximum rear wheel grip over slippery surfaces.
Both the loader and excavator benefit from flow sharing hydraulics that enable multi-functioning for efficient and smooth operation. BL71B features load sensing hydraulics that constantly adapt to the needs of the job in hand. With oil delivery that matches the required force, there is always the speed and power required for all hydraulic functions.
In applications such as load and carry, where speed is important, the system efficiently delivers the required flow.
Improved CareCab
The redesigned Volvo CareCab is now better than ever. Boasting 15% more space than before, the room between the operator’s seat and the left side of the cab has been increased, as has space around the excavator mechanical controls or pilots towers, making the position change between loader and excavator easier and more convenient.
There is also a larger area to store personal items. A comfortable place to work, the seat, steering controls and instruments are all designed to lower fatigue and keep operators alert and in control. Comfort can be increased further with multi-adjustable steering column and high performance heating & cooling systems. A 30% increase in glass area combined with narrow pillars and a sloping hood bonnet design allow excellent all round visibility when working. Visibility is helped outside the cab, by adjustable standard-fit halogen work lights, and internally by a large cab dome light for safer entry and exit of the cab.
Tools for every job
Both ends of the machine can be equipped with versatile, easy-to-use attachments and quick couplers. B-Series backhoes can be configured with general or multi-purpose loader buckets, pallet forks, hydraulic thumb, standard and heavy duty excavator buckets, hydraulic breaker attachments – a vast range of solutions. Bucket loader capacities range up to 1.0 m³ and the backhoe excavator buckets have a maximum volume of 0.33 m³.
Service and daily maintenance is made easy with the B-Series, with a one piece lifting hood and filters/service points all grouped together at ground level. Fewer greasing points and long greasing intervals also help to increase uptime. A tilting oil cooler in front of the radiator makes cleaning both the cooler and the radiator quick and easy.
Genuine service
Volvo Construction Equipment provides much more than a vast range of attachments and genuine service and maintenance products. Advanced machines need state-of-art support in order to maximize uptime, productivity and resale values. A wide range of service plans are available, as are analysis and diagnostics tools. Each backhoe loader can, as an option, be fitted with Volvo’s CareTrack telematics system, which provides vital information on servicing, potential problems and location etc – allowing better
planning and smarter working.
New Generation Telehandlers from Bobcat
In a significant development, Bobcat is launching a new generation of 6 and 7 m telehandlers. These new generation models offer a range of improvements and several features, benefits and options that are completely new not only to the Bobcat telehandler family, but also to the industry as a whole. For example, a patented asymmetric cab takes visibility to a new level by offering an unobstructed view across the rear of the machine while an optional 190l/min load sensing pump offers faster speeds when performing single and combined boom movements.
The new generation TL models replace the previous T2556, T2566 and T3571 telehandlers. The TL360, with its range of features and variety of configurations, replaces both the T2556 and the T2566 models, while the TL470 replaces the T3571 and T3571HD telehandler models. The TL360 and TL470 are both powered by the 74.5 kW Perkins 1104D-44T diesel engine and offer a standard hydraulic flow via a gear pump of 100 l/min.
The TL360 and TL470 telehandlers have lift capacities of 3.0 and 3.5 tonne, respectively. Both machines offer a lift capacity at full height of 3.0 tonne. The maximum forward reach of the TL360 is 3365 mm, while that of the TL470 is 4002 mm, the lift capacity at full reach being 1300 and 1500 kg, respectively.

Best in class visibility
Thanks to the design of a new patented asymmetric cab, the right rear corner is completely free of structural components, offering the operator an unmatched and unobstructed visibility across the entire rear of the machine. In addition, the lowered boom pivot point further improves visibility. The rounded front windscreen offers full visibility of the attachment at all heights and boom extensions. This ensures the operator has full awareness and control over the load at all times, significantly improving productivity and safety.
In order to create a more comfortable work environment for the operator, the cab has been widened. This in combination with the rounded cab design and high-resistance glass cover gives the operator an airy and spacious environment in which to work. All controls are ergonomically designed and positioned for maximum ease of use while the electronic dashboard display gives the operator an excellent overview of the machine’s performance.
An optional all-glass door further increases visibility to the left side of the telehandler, making it easier to manoeuvre in confined areas and travel safely close to the side of buildings and structures. The all-glass door gives the operator excellent spatial awareness at all times, reducing the risk of damage to the machine or surrounding objects.
The forward/reverse control function is placed on the joystick to make it easier and more convenient to control the machine. Driving direction is selected at the touch of a button while the operator can continue to keep a grip on both the steering wheel and the joystick. This allows for fast and easy changes between forward and reverse directions with optimum reactivity and complete, confident control of all machine functions.
Built to last
Building on the concepts and developments used for the versatile T2250 model, the TL range now takes development standards a step further. By incorporating best practices across our businesses and product lines, the TL models are benefiting from many years of expertise and industry knowledge. This is clearly evident in the end result, with a telehandler that not only is robust and reliable, but also strong and agile.
A new robust main frame and protected chassis design ensure maximum strength and protection for a long and productive life. The boom design, which features a fully integrated boom head, larger cross section and a longer boom overlap, ensures the TL models are well equipped to handle the toughest loading applications.
Maintenance and service
The new TL telehandlers are designed with minimal maintenance and service work in mind. All models feature a parallel side-mounted engine that provides easy and safe access to the main engine maintenance points. The battery is located at the front of the engine basket for easy access, while the filters are strategically placed for easy and quick replacement. Standard features include an electronic battery switch and onboard diagnostics that contribute to the high reliability of the machine to ensure maximum uptime. All critical areas are covered and protected from the elements when the machine is in operation, providing longer life and less risk of damage to components. Access holes with covers that can be quickly removed are strategically placed on the mainframe.

A comprehensive range of optional features, including a 40 km/h travel speed, boom suspension and 190l/min load sensing pump, allows the new generation telehandlers to be customised to suit specific job requirements. Moreover, a full range of attachments is available to ensure the TL telehandlers can perform a wide variety of applications.
Safe Drilling from DEWALT - Cordless, low vibration and dust free:
Health and Safety is paramount in the workplace and with the added emphasis on dust control, DEWALT has designed a low vibration cordless drilling system with integrated dust extraction to combat this. The DC234KL 36v rotary hammer can now produce low vibration and dust free drilling in conjunction with the new D25302DH integrated dust extraction adaptor.
Long term exposure to certain dusts (especially in silica aggregates) can cause silicosis or asthma. These risks can now be seriously reduced by using the DEWALT system. The D25302DH has an independent motor and draws its power from the 36v battery in the drill. Having an independent motor ensures that full suction power is obtained and that there is no reduction in drilling performance. It works with a sprung loaded extendable nose-piece attached to the handle and a hose that is attached to the nose piece from the dust collector. This means that the extraction works directly on the work piece and all dust is cleared immediately. The vacuum starts as soon as the trigger is pressed and remains on for several seconds after the trigger is released to ensure all hoses are clear after drilling. The dust collector has a HEPA filter, is bagless and is easily emptied simply by removing the cartridge and emptying the contents into a bin.
The DC234KL itself has very low vibration figures. The internal gearbox has its own unique suspended gear case that helps reduce vibration to only 8m/s² (EN60745). It is supplied with 2 x 36v Lithium-Ion batteries and a charger allowing maximum run-time and power. To further enhance the confidence DEWALT have in this new technology these Lithium-Ion batteries now come with a 2 year warranty. The DC234KL is currently available. The D25302DH dust extraction attachment is available from April 2010.
